About Streekmuseum Reeuwijk

Streekmuseum Reeuwijk is a local history museum housed in a traditional farmhouse dating from 1907, still largely in its original state. The museum is located in Reeuwijk, in the heart of the lake district known as the Reeuwijkse Plassen.
Our mission is to show everyday life in the Reeuwijk area in the early 20th century: what people did for work, how they lived, what their houses looked like, and how the landscape was shaped. A major theme is peat cutting and dredging – hard manual work that created the characteristic Reeuwijk lakes.
The museum exists thanks to a very active volunteer team (around 70 volunteers) and the support of donors and visitors.

What you can see

Inside the farmhouse you’ll find reconstructed rooms and workshops from “grandmother’s time,” including a classroom, a village shop, traditional tools from peat extraction, and small craft workshops that have disappeared from daily life. There are also historic boats and models that explain how the peat landscape turned into water. 

We also keep a large local photo archive, school photos, documents, and genealogical records. Visitors interested in family history in Reeuwijk and the surrounding villages can browse these materials, including family cards going back to the 17th century.
For children there are treasure-hunt style activities and interactive elements that make local history more hands-on. 

Opening hours / Season

We are open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 13:00 to 17:00. Group visits outside these hours are possible by appointment.
